It was a wonderful day in the Port City! They demonstrated their usual style and finesse, dressed in black suits, hats, violets, and pearls. They gathered to pay tribute a chapter that began in 1942, a chapter that that has grown to over 300 strong, continuously building upon a foundation set by its charter members. They continue to remain on the forefront in sisterhood, in scholarship and in service, for they are Delta Pearls of Mobile Alumnae: A Cultural Treasure for 64 Years
This year’s weekend gala, chaired by Soror Ernestine Jackson, commenced with the Dedication Ceremony and a reception at Bishop State Community College followed by the luncheon held Saturday at the Riverview Plaza Hotel. Tommie B. Conaway greeted those in attendance which included Mobile Alumnae’s Dr. Yvonne Kennedy, 19th National President of Delta Sigma Theta, National 1st Vice President Cynthia Butler-McIntyre, Southern Regional Director Cynthia R. Boyd, and South Alabama State Coordinator, Myrtis Ramsey.
Our National 1st Vice President, Soror Cynthia Butler-McIntyre delivered a very stimulating message, challenging us to reflect, renew, and reconnect to that which brought us into the great sisterhood of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She reminded us that we are indeed among greatness, but inquired what has Delta gained through you? She so vividly characterized the 93 years of accomplishments, principles and ideals of an organization that has sparked communities and generations. Soror Butler-McIntyre reminded us that the core of Delta Sigma Theta rests on the shoulders of our illustrious founders who were “mere college students” who were on a mission and had a vision to make things happen! Her message was received with a standing ovation!
Membership Services Chairs Dora G. Simpson and Beverly Summerlin honored Mobile Alumnae’s 25 and 50-year sorors with commemorative plaques.
Mobile Alumnae also recognized guests in attendance from Moss Point and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Alumnae chapters. This was indeed a very memorable and enjoyable experience!
