Dr Yvonne
Kennedy,
our 19th International President,
received the Mary Church Terrell Award at our sorority's 47th
National Convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada. This award is one
of the highest honors that one can receive in our sorority. This
award is presented to an individual who exemplifies courage,
commitment, and dedication to equality for African-American. Dr.
Kennedy exemplifies such qualities. Dr. Kennedy
receives Mary Church Terrell from National President Gwendolyn
E. Boyd at 47th National Convention
The honorable Yvonne Kennedy has
demonstrated a lifelong commitment to fostering equality,
access, and advancement in education at all levels. Dr. Kennedy
is a visionary leader, a legislator, an educator and a civil
rights advocate.
Dr. Kennedy's endeavors in all things has placed her in the
unique position of being first in a
number of fields. In addition to her international presidency of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she was the
first and only
African American woman ever named First Lady of Mobile, the
first and only
African American woman in Alabama appointed to the presidency of
a state college, Bishop State Community College, and the
first and only
African American woman elected to the House of Representatives
from Mobile county.
Dr. Kennedy's leadership

President of the Beta Eta Chapter(1965-1966)
President of the Mobile Alumnae Chapter
(1970-1974 and 1978-1982)
Southern Regional Director
(1974-1978)
National First Vice President
(1983-1988)
Unanimous election as the National President during the
Sorority's 75th Diamond Jubilee Convention in San Francisco

Among many awards and honors bestowed upon her
for outstanding service include Honorary Doctor of Humane
Letters from the Alabama Interdenominational Seminary, Inc., in
Mobile, AL, the Honorary Doctor of Letters Degree from Lane
College in Jackson, Tennessee, and the Honorary Doctor of Laws
Degree from her Alma Mater, Alabama State University.

Hortense CanadyThe Mobile Chapter of the YWCA presented her
with a lifetime Achievement Award. At the 2005 Southern Regional
Convention, Dr. Kennedy became the recipient of the Keeper of
the Flame Award. |
